I'm sure someone would have told me by now. emoticon

Hey Josh, good to see you around again! Thanks for the update about yourself - maybe we should all do that once in a while.

Maybe it's time for my own update.

Most people, if not all, will wear a mask at least once in their life, and I'm no exception. I am open about many things, but there is something in my personal life that I either never talked about, exaggerated the good points and downplayed the bad, or simply omitted details from.

In my first post of this thread, on August 2 of last year, I wrote:

quote:

I'm married to a wonderful man, whom I met when I was 17. While we each have different interests, we share the same basic values, we support each other's endeavors, we are best friends, we can tell each other anything, and we trust each other completely. I would say it's a match made in heaven, but since I am a naturalist, I'll just say that it is very fortunate for both of us that we met when we did. emoticon

With such flowery wording, one might expect to also find, "and after all these years, we're still madly in love with each other," or at least find the word, "happily" before "married". However, while some bits of the above statement were exaggerated, it would have been a lie to include those things I omitted.

Without getting too detailed about our marriage, who did what wrong, or what was done in an attempt to fix it, I ended it nearly a year ago, and we lived as roommates until he moved out on Aug 15. It hasn't been an easy transition for either of us after so many years, but I'm finally moving past that and hope he is, too.

Anyway, I don't wish to turn this into a discussion about my marriage or the ending of it. It's private, that's all I wish to say here on the matter, and I believe in learning from our past while looking toward the future.

I'll repeat, so it doesn't get lost in this post:
quote:

I don't wish to turn this into a discussion about my marriage or the ending of it. It's private, that's all I wish to say here on the matter, and I believe in learning from our past while looking toward the future.

This means I don't want any, "Oh, Lesa, I'm so sorry to hear about that!" types of responses in this thread. While I appreciate the support I've gotten from people about this in private, I'd rather focus this thread on the things that are already quite public, and things that will be more public in the future.

That said...

During the past year, my priorities have changed. For the first time in my adult life, I'm on my own, and I'm finally putting my happiness before anyone else's. Of course, that doesn't mean I don't concern myself with anyone else's happiness, but I am taking care of myself first. I'm finally taking the advice that I've so often dished out to others: You must first put your own oxygen mask on, to make sure you don't pass out before you can help others... or something like that.

While I do still participate in debates and speak up when I see a wrong that needs to be righted, those activities have been taking a back seat this past year while I work on a more selfish goal. Once I reach that goal, I should again have more time for activism and debate if I still wish to do so, but my priority right now is achieving that goal.

My goal involves being able to earn a living from anywhere in the world. I started working on my blog back in February and launched it in March for this purpose, and have plans on writing a related book someday, which of course will be advertised through the blog. The YouTube karaoke thing wasn't planned before I started doing it, but I'm also seeing where that can take me. Most recently, I started offering web hosting to the public, which I'll be advertising through the blog. Currently, I have 2 ads on there for it.

Another idea I'd like to pursue is making training videos for companies. A few months ago, someone sent me some screen grabs and instructions for a program I had never used before. I made a video out of it, then sent it to the person who had sent me those screen grabs and instructions. He said it was very good and thought it would be great to have something like that for people who are new to the system, which made me think I could make some good money at it. After I launched my blog intro video, Queeny's husband saw it, made a comment along those same lines, and other people agreed, so I'll definitely be looking into adding that to my list of endeavors.

I also plan on making more Runboard-related how-to videos. Not only can they benefit Runboard and the people who use it, but I have to admit, the selfish part of me realizes this can also be good advertisement for myself. But hey, there is even something selfish in social work. Don't social workers do what they do because it makes them feel good when they are able to help others? If helping others didn't make them feel good, they might decide to become lawyers instead. emoticon

Unfortunately, working a 40-hour job and keeping up with my other responsibilities leave me less time to work on these things than I would like. I can't afford to quit my day job and have no intention of slacking on those other responsibilities, so the process right now is slow-going. But with the motivation I've had this year like never before, and the support of some pretty great people, I have no doubt I can achieve my goals eventually. emoticon
