Warning about shampoo used to treat lice

Here is the link to the news article:

Bone marrow destroyed after treatment with lice shampoo

OK now I know that traditionally parents put little kids into the bath to wash their hair but surely if you are using a chemical to kill pests on your kid's head you wouldn't put the kid into a bath of the chemical.

Or am I over-optimistic about the intelligence of the average parent?

I think it is a matter of trust Mo. Pharmaceutical companies, we are told, have to put a product through years of testing and then the government has to approve the product before it is made available to the public. This leads people to feel safe when using the drug or product and sets us up for potential tragedy such as the one described in the news article.

Yes other people I've mentioned this to today have told me that I'm being too harsh and that there should be dire warnings on the packaging. I guess they're right. I do know however, that if my boy came home with a lice scare, I would firstly give him a really close haircut and then apply a small amount of the shampoo over the hand wash basin in the bathroom, I certainly wouldn't immerse his whole body in water laden with poison.
But then I'm over-protective when it comes to kids.

Ohhh Mo, being the mother of 3 girls who lonve long hair, I know this problem very well. When they were all under the age of 10 they were forever coming home with the beasties. I am one of them Mums that would spend my Sunday afternoons with a nit comb going thru their hair. It took ages per child.
It was like a never ending problem. In the end I refuse to use the special stuff on them as it wasn't working anyway. But NO WAY would I have put them in the bath with the stuff, im with you on that one. It would go on their head outside on the balcony as it would smell so much. Then the next morning in the shower and bedding all changed.

I have found now that its conditioner which is your best bet. Put loads of the cheap conditioner on their head and then go thru with the comb, the lice can't hang onto the hair so they come away faster.
Teach your kids to do this with each shower in the shower and they will soon come clear.

It has now been 2 years since my girls have had them.
My boy at 10 still comes home with them and when he does I get out the shaver and off with the hair. emoticon

I have never had the problem but I found this really simple remedy on the internet:

Teri Jean

Date: Tuesday, May 31, 2005
Time: 4:19 AM EST
Karyn Bay
Country of Remedy: New Zealand

Ingredients: Salt and Shower Gel/Shampoo
Instructions: I have a large family of ten. About two years ago we all had lice. Three short haircuts and seven with long hair.We could not get rid of it we tried Toxic Chemicals, Lice shampoos, Mayo, Olive oil etc. But our family justcould not get rid of it. Much to my dismay. Then I heard of this very simple remedy I felt surely this would not work everything else certainly hadn't! Salt and body Sampoo/Gel. We took one bottle of body shampoo that was slightly used, then we put about 3 tablespoons of salt in the bottle with the body shampoo gel. Shook it up and we just plastered it all over scalp and hair. We did not even have to cover it. We just left it on the hair for about one hour then washed it with normal shampoolike we usually do. We kept checking day after day, week after week. Nothing was there it was so amazing everyones hair was so shiny aswell. We have not had even a hint of them back in two years.

This seems like such a simple, safe and easy way to handle the problem without resorting to overpriced "specialty" products...

I have trouble with "dry scalp" which makes my head itch if I don't take care of it fairly often but I suppose the head lice stay away from me because of that so its worth the inconvenience.

A wonderful cure that I discovered decades ago when I was nursing and had the same problem is this old-fashioned stuff:

Gentian violet

You need to put only two drops into some water and dip your head into it every day - don't put more in or your hair will turn purple (your favourite color LOL). But after about three treatments, the problem should start to disappear.

I used to use it on my babies if they developed cradle cap and even on the kids when they got older and developed greasy hair problems that come with being a teenager. It does work. but as I said only two drops, no more.

I once had to walk around with purple hair much to the annoyance of my superiors at the hospital because I used too much. It did fix the problem though.
