Re: Brother is an idiot!
quote: So Mel, you are saying that if your brother is a serial killer, you will not condemn him but will protect him from the law and stand by him when he is tried, sentenced and condemned to death!
No, ma'am, that is not what I've said at all. I think Pastor Rick summed it up nicely in his post.
quote: If one of my kids committed a crime, he would be thrown out of my family without any further ado. I do not consort with criminals.
Now see, this is the difference. The consequences for the crime must be paid, but why be thrown out of the family as well? Have you done no wrong yourself? Is this why you hate Christianity so much, simply because forgiveness is available to everyone?
quote: Isn't there somewhere in the Bible where it says something to the effect of "Am I my brother's keeper" - words to that effect?
Yeah, that's what Cain said when God was questioning him about killing his brother.
quote: I just can not go there and remain true to my own self or to the memory of my father.
I understand, Pastor Rick, it is a difficult situation when family members continue to get into trouble. I wouldn't say that you should support or condone his behavior, but I wouldn't go as far as Morwen, either.
Again, I offer the words of encouragement: With God, all things are possible. Keep praying.
quote: The law is the law and you have to obey it.
That brings us to an interesting transition, wouldn't you think? God has given us His moral law, and we've all broken it. We know it's wrong to lie, to steal, to covet, yet who has never done any of these things? The Bible is clear on the just punishment for breaking the law, and you, Morwen, state that you would have no mercy for the lawbreaker, which reminds me of the story in Matt 18:23-35.
Yet God, in His great mercy has provided a way! He is an amazing and loving God, yet also righteous and just.
He is your Savior or else He is your Judge, but either way, you will glorify Him!

Re: Brother is an idiot!
In 59 years of driving I received only one ticket. And that was because the load of hay I was hauling had shifted to the left while driving on some rough roads.
My siblings would never under any circumstance be abandoned by me! I might be the only person who would stand by him/her! And that does not mean that I would overlook his/her behavior.

Re: Brother is an idiot!
To reply to what Mel said about morality. I'm sorry but I don't agree with your idea of morality.
I don't go along with what the 10 commandments say simply because it is not practical, and you know this because you've seen my analysis of the 10 commandments, suffice to say that 'honor your father and mother' means despite whatever they may do to you.
So if your father is a child molester and you catch him molesting a child, you're supposed to just look the other way and keep on respecting him, because that's what the commandment says? Not me, I'd make quite sure that he never molested anything ever again.
And as for killing and 'bearing false witness' perjury is not the same as telling a white lie. Of course we've all lied. If you don't tell lies, then why don't you publish your posts under your own name? Every time you make a post under your assumed name you are, strictly speaking, telling a lie, and why? To protect your identity. So if you're prepared to assume another name to protect your identity then what other lies are you prepared to tell?
The commandment does not say 'you shall not lie' it says 'false witness' that's not the same thing.
And in my opinion, killing is killing, and killing is murder, killing an animal to eat it is murder because we are all animals anyway. I know we'll disagree about that one forever, and I can live with that, you eat your steak and I'll enjoy my carrots.

No, that's not what it says. Could you quote the part that actually says that?
quote: perjury is not the same as telling a white lie.
The commandment is not limited to perjury, and the Scripture is clear that "All liars will have their part in the lake of fire." Not just perjurers.
quote: Of course we've all lied. If you don't tell lies, then why don't you publish your posts under your own name? Every time you make a post under your assumed name you are, strictly speaking, telling a lie, and why? To protect your identity. So if you're prepared to assume another name to protect your identity then what other lies are you prepared to tell?
Now we're just getting off on a rabbit trail and I'll not go with you.
quote: And in my opinion, killing is killing, and killing is murder, killing an animal to eat it is murder because we are all animals anyway.
Not in my view.
quote: you eat your steak and I'll enjoy my carrots.
Works for me!

Re: Brother is an idiot!
I happen to like carrots, spinach, beans, cabbage, corn potatoes, onions, beets, peaches, apples, cheeries, blackberries. all kinds of other fruit. Many kinds of cereals.
But once in a while I like eggs, fish, hamburger's, bacon, chicken, and sausage. And I raise my own chickens for the eggs.
A few years ago I had milk cows. and I made my own butter and farmers cheese.
It was a way of life for millions of people!
Farm raised kids dont have time to get into trouble as a rule. They are far too busy weeding gardens etcetera. Their parents try to instill acceptable values within their kids. Sometimes these values do not really germinate as hoped for. And the youngster goes astray.
But a loving parent does not give up and neither does a sibling when he becomes aware of a brother or sister having difficulties!

Aw, common Mel, admit that you lie every time you don't use your own name. Laugh, it's good for you.

Re: Brother is an idiot!
I dunno, there are some very funny names around these days! I did get you to laugh though. I'm just pulling your leg.
Seriously though I don't like lies, not when it counts. But I would lie if someone was torturing me. If I didn't know the answer and the torturer thought I did, I'd tell him whatever he wanted to know just to stop the torture.
And of course we lie every time we tell kids that the tooth fairy or Santa Claus really exists.
But when it comes to having done something wrong, I don't punish a subordinate if they tell the truth but if I catch someone in a lie, I'll never trust what they tell me again.
