Preaching Thread

Image
I'm gonna do some preaching in here, for anyone who might want to hear it. If you're not interested in this sort of thing, just take a look at the title and you don't have to come in - pretty simple. Just forewarning all the sensitive types out there.

So, here we go. We'll start out with our purpose in life and then go into how each and every one of us, believers and non-believers alike WILL glorify our Creator.
We were created in the image of God, to be His image bearers, showing the world what He is like. So every time we lie, steal, lust or hate, by our very actions, we are giving a bad testimony about God.

He is rightfully angry about this slander against His name, and warns us that the punishment will be severe. Yet, out of His great love, He provides a way, not that we could work or do anything, but that He has already done, in order to keep us out of this punishment that we deserve. He made this payment for us, leaving us only to repent and trust in Him for salvation. This demonstrates His great love, His grace and mercy to the world, that He would do this for unworthy sinners such as ourselves, and He is glorified in that.

But what of those who don't believe, who don't trust in Him? How do they still glorify the Lord, when that is the last thing they would ever let happen?
Well, it's simple really. God is our soverign Creator, and even these people will glorify Him. As they suffer the just punishment for their sins, they glorify the Lord as a demonstration of His righteous justice.
The Lord is glorified either way - as your Savior or as your Judge. Which one sounds better to you?

Re: Preaching Thread

So, are there any "good" Christians out there? I would say, no, there is not. Because a Christian is a Christ follower, who believes that the Bible is the Word of God. And that Word says that there are none found righteous, not even one. It says the human heart is deceitully wicked, and that all of our works are as filthy rags before the Lord.

With that understanding, we know that any goodness we may have is not of us, but from the grace of God Himself.

A Christian with understanding of what the Bible teaches then, should answer, as John MacArthur did when asked this question, "I have an alien righteousness."
I like that.

Re: Preaching Thread

Why would this be called a "preaching thread" without the use of the scripture Mel? At the very best this would be a devotional or meditation thread as it is not anchored in the word of God upon which all sermons must be based and judged.

So then, if this is a sermon "concept" which you have been working on I can commend you well for setting up your initial ideas and thoughts in place. You state as your main premise "our purpose in life" upon which you want to build the rest of the sermon. My first thought then is to check out:

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14
- Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.
- For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Here the scripture gives us "the whole duty of man" granted this is not exactly equal with the "purpose in life" premise you wish to start with but it is somewhat analogous so it may be a good starting point in sermon developement.

Hey Pastor Rick! emoticon

I guess it's more of a "street preaching" thread than a "church preaching" thread.
I'm talking about the law and the need of a Savior and it is most definately based on Scripture. If you find something that you don't think has Biblical backing, let me know.
As for Eccl 12:13-14, awesome verse - that IS the meaning of life, right there for anyone to find! And if you look closely at what it says, you'll find that "duty" is in italics, which means it wasn't in the original. It was added by translaters for clarity, but the verse actually makes better sense without it.
Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole of man.
It's not our duty, but our very essence, what we are.

Don't encourage him to copy and paste, Rick! emoticon I only read a few lines, but I like that he's using his own words, and I love that he titled this thread the way he did.

Bravo, Mel! emoticon

Sorry for going off topic. I'll bow out now and let the street preacher continue. I won't even read further, because I know I'll disagree and I don't want to be tempted to debate in this thread. emoticon

O but there is a world of difference in this one Lesa, You don't cut-n-paste the sermon and in this format even cutting and pasting the scripture could easily become a tedious thing for a reader. I love the setting down of the thoughts and ideas for a sermon but when it blossoms into a true sermon the scripture basis must at least be cited even if it isn't quoted in the post... For example, currently Mel is only citing one source for his sermon idea which is a quotation from John MacArthur. In the finished product there should be at least the same number of citations from the scripture showing how he arrives at his conclusion (4 is often said to be the best number).

Lol, I thought of posting 4 contradictory accounts of the same story just now (one from each of the 4 gospels), but I promised I wouldn't debate in this thread. emoticon

It's true that even street preachers reference passages in the Bible, but Mel quotes it so often, I think it's refreshing that he's posting in his own words. Maybe he just needs to change the title to "Witnessing Thread." emoticon

emoticon "Oh, look! He's using his words! Isn't that cute?"
You two crack me up. emoticon

Yeah, maybe "Witnessing Thread" would be better, but most would call it preaching, and for those who are opposed to being preached at, I just thought I'd go ahead and warn them up front.

Here ya go, Pastor Rick:
---------------
So, are there any "good" Christians out there? I would say, no, there is not. Because a Christian is a Christ follower, who believes that the Bible is the Word of God. And that Word says that there are none found righteous, not even one (Psalm 14:3, Rom 3:12 ). It says the human heart is deceitfully wicked (Jer 17:9 ), and that all of our works are as filthy rags before the Lord (Isaiah 64:6).

With that understanding, we know that any goodness we may have is not of us, but from the grace of God Himself (Mark 10:18, Matt 5:45 )

A Christian with understanding of what the Bible teaches then, should answer (Col 1:28 ), as John MacArthur did when asked this question, "I have an alien righteousness." (Rom 3:21 )
I like that.
---------------
Whatcha think?

Now, if one of you could get the Ref Tagger to work on Runboard, you wouldn't even have to look up the verses! (It only seems to be available in javascript, though emoticon )

I want to ask a question of the preachers?
What is the point? If none are found worthy why bother?
Damned if you do and damned if you don't?
It's a little like trying to please my dad. He didn't notice that I got 100% for shorthand theory and Commercial Law, he only noticed that I failed shorthand speed writing and typing speed tests.
I guess my dad was a little like God?

Simply to understand the NEED for a Savior. If one thinks that they are good enough, or can work their way into heaven, they will never understand the Gospel.
quote:

Damned if you do and damned if you don't?

No, but a proper understanding of the justice in our damnation, knowing that we deserve that, and then beginning to comprehend the great love of God in offering His mercy in salvation through no works of our own.
quote:

It is different than that. We don't get 100% in anything as far as following God's law, none of us. We cannot earn it, we don't deserve it, and that's why Jesus Christ had to die to take on that punishment for us. We were without hope, no chance of saving ourselves.
quote:

I guess my dad was a little like God?

You know, I'm really sorry to hear that your dad was like that. Every child should be loved, supported and encouraged. If your dad was really a little like God, he would love you enough to lay down his life for you.
