What about Scientific Methods?

emoticon Do not read this unless you really have an open mind!

It is my belief that same sex sexual orientation is a behavior which may be acted upon or not by personal choice. The reasons behind the orientation do not matter in this case though.

In California a bill has been passed (it goes into effect January 1, 2013) which Governor Jerry Brown believed would ban "nonscientific ‘therapies’ that have driven young people to depression and suicide,” He reiterated this belief after signing the bill by stating "These practices have no basis in science or medicine, and they will now be relegated to the dustbin of quackery.”

Now if the bill really did that I think I would be in favor of it. No one should be forced to undergo tortures like electric shock therapy or mind altering drugs which was very popular in the past and not just for sexual orientation issues.

The problem, to me, is that the actual language of the bill says no "“mental health provider” shall provide minors with therapy intended to change their sexual orientation, including efforts to “change behaviors or gender expressions, or to eliminate or reduce sexual or romantic attractions or feelings toward individuals of the same sex.”

What's missing?

First: The bill doesn't just ban non-scientific practices but any and all practices (even scientifically sound methods or practices which either exist now or which may exist in the future) that could help someone who actually wants to change or control their sexual behavior.

Second: The bill addresses only people who have a same sex attraction. Apparently it is still permissible to use those techniques or methods on people who might wish to change their heterosexual feelings.

Third: The bill makes a de facto ruling that no minor can make this decision for his or her self, that all minors are forced into the treatments available against their will and that given a choice they would never want to change or even explore their own minds regarding why they feel the way they do.

No deep thoughts here, just an observation:

California AND
Governor Jerry Brown

Those should or could just explain it all...
