Alien invasions

What is your opinion about extra-terrestrials? Do they exist? Is there life out there? Or are we truly the only planet in the entire universe that has life?
Your opinion?

First, there is no evidence of "Intelligent Life" on this planet. Second, If we are all there is in the Universe, we are in serious trouble. Pastor Rick hopes there are Vulcans.

Don't you mean there isn't "much" intelligent life on this planet? emoticon Welcome aboard, Red Ant! emoticon

I think life in general could be plentiful on other planets. I would also expect some of that life to be similar to ours, since so many traits have evolved independently in different species. For example, birds and bats both have wings, but those wings weren't inherited from a common ancestor. Eyes are another thing that have evolved independently in different species. Also, whales and hippos are more related to each other than whales are to fish or hippos to elephants. So yes, I would expect to see organisms on different planets with leaves, legs, eyes, wings, fins, etc., although not all in the same organism.

One thing that has not evolved in any other species on our planet, however, is the ability to build things like computers and space craft. While descendents of bonobos or orangutans might be that advanced a million years from now, we still share a common ancestor that gave us many shared traits. Sure, there are other intelligent species on our planet like dolphins and certain birds, but none that can travel to the moon without our help.

That said, our solar system is only 4.5 billion years old, give or take, the universe is over 17 billion years old, and there are so many billions of galaxies with who knows how many planets in the universe. So, it seems very likely that there would be life on other planets that is as technologically advanced as we are, if not more so. However, I wouldn't expect such intelligence to be as common as wings or fins, and they would probably have to travel on a generational ship to get here, unless they have found a way around the whole spacetime obstacle, so I think the chances of us being visited by extraterrestrials is very slim, unfortunately.

I say unfortunately, because I think any species that is advanced enough to accomplish such a feat would also have to be enlightened enough to be less war-like than humans are, and we could learn a lot from them.

I always say "the more smileys, the better".

Lesa, my feeling about life on other planets is that if you work with the theory we discussed elsewhere, then it all began with an accumulation of dust and then will all end with more dust. And this is what I think has happened before.
In other words, the process of evolution doesn't actually end it begins with a spark of life at the beginning and just keeps on developing more and more 'intelligence' until a point where the whole thing, the planet and its life forms all die out again. And I think this is happening in various stages all over the universe: that there are planets that are only developing the 'spark' and others that have creatures climbing out of the trees, and others that are almost at the point of disappearing into nothing again. And I bet that all of them wonder about the same things we do.
Not a scientific explanation but I've never pretended to be a scientist.

Scientific or not, it's still very logical. After the spark, there still has to be time, opportunity, and the right environmental pressures for a species to evolve in the direction that we have. Our neanderthal cousins were advanced enough to make and use tools and lived right alongside our ancestors, but the neanderthals went extinct, while our ancestors survived and continued to evolve. If our ancestors had become extinct as well, then nobody on earth would be having these types of discussions right now, and certainly not over an internet. But who knows? Four or five million years from now, the human line could be long extinct, and the descendants of bonobos or chimpanzees could be carrying briefcases to 9-5 jobs, having these conversations and studying other planets up close. That is, if the cause of our extinction isn't at our own hands, in which case we could very well end up taking all the rest of the apes with us.

Joining in the discussion!

Not that I have much to say at this stage because I'm in a hurry as usual ..

I definitely do believe that we are not the only life form. We may be the most advanced species here on earth as we know it, but I'm convinced that there are other planets or stars or whatever, where life exists - even if it isn't as developed as we are here. Having said that I can't really offer any scientific theories or indeed any other theories for my belief other than what you've already said, and a sort of instinct!

Statistically speaking, when you consider the number of planets in the universe, the odds are we cannot be the only "intelligent" (if that is what some would like to call the human species) life in the universe.
