Rick, Mel, Free, somebody, I'd really appreciate an explanation for what you, or your religious point of view means, when they speak about life being sacred.
As a humanist, and I do regard myself as someone who cares about all living creatures being allowed to live on a planet protected against destruction, rather than an avenger on a mission to attack all who disagree with me, I believe that all life should be protected, not only the select few who abide by the rules.
What exactly does it mean, when people who believe in their religion say that 'life is sacred'? Please talk to me about this.

May I join in here?

Sanctity according to the Concise Oxford Dictionary implies saintliness, holiness, and inviolability.

Life is precious, sure, and to be enjoyed while it lasts. But even from a religious viewpoint I don't see that any person is particularly saintly, holy, or not violated in some way.

I'm also interested to see what the others have to say Mo.

Of course I'm interested to see what it means to you Petal. I'd like to know what it means from the point of view of a devout Christian.

I'd say that it comes from the idea that we are all created in God's image, and thus all have value.

The sixth commandment says we shall not murder, but that does not include killing for food, in war, or in defense of self or others. Those are seperate issues.

I find time is not my friend (overslept) emoticon

The concept is actually the sanctity of human life and begins in Genesis where God makes man with his own hands in his own image. I have dozens of scripture verses but the concept is that man is not just a animal, we are formed in the image of God (body, soul and spirit) and should respect and treat each person as such.

God sets the standard in the christian worldview so how human life is treated is also defined by him. Once we take a step away from the idea that we are made by God, in his image, then we start down the road where man is just a animal with very tragic results.

I hesitate on the amount of detail to include on this because I am not sure if you are just seeking the general idea or if you are looking for the foundation and reasons behind the doctrine.

So as I understand it, only human life is sacred.

And secondly, is all human life sacred?

Can you point out some biblical references to only human life being sacred please Rick?

Re: The sanctity of life

I found all of this while searching for a distinction between 'kill' and 'murder'.

quote:

According to the Bible not all killing, the taking of a life, is murder. Murder is the unlawfully taking of human life. The command not to murder applies to human beings, not to killing animals or plant life for food. God gave animals to mankind for his use (Genesis 1:26-30; 9:1-4). But, this does not mean that humans have the right mistreat animals and the environment (Genesis 2:15; Deuteronomy 22:6-7; 25:4; Proverbs 12:10).

Under the Old Covenant God allowed the Israelites to kill other humans under very special circumstances such as punishment for certain sins, for example, murder (Exodus 21:12-14, Leviticus 24:17, 21) and adultery (Leviticus 20:10, Deuteronomy 22:22-24). God also allowed the Israelites to engage in warfare and even gave them instructions about waging war (Deuteronomy 20:1-20). God also recognized that humans might accidentally kill each other, and he made provisions for this (Numbers 35:9-34; Deuteronomy 19:1-13).

The primary reason God hates murder is that out of all creation, only human are made in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27; 9:4-6). Even before the codification of the Ten Commandments at Mount Sinai the murder of other human beings was wrong (Genesis 4:8-12; 4:23-24; 9:4-6; Exodus 1:16-17). While on earth, Jesus spoke out against murder (Matthew 5:21-26; Mark 10:17-19). We also see in the writings of Paul (Romans 1:18, 29-32; 13:8-10; Galatians 5:19-21), James (James 2:8-11; 4:1-3), Peter (1 Peter 4:15-16) and John (Revelation 9:20-21; 21:7-8; 22:14-15) that murder is wrong.

I can accept that the commandment is intended to mean 'kill other humans' if animals were deemed to be separate from humans, and that according to religion, we are more than mere mammals ( I don't believe that, but putting personal belief aside) so for the purposes of this discussion, isn't it a little convenient that once having said that you are not allowed to kill, the person who was interpreting the 'law\ realised that there had to be distinctions made for war, accidents and blatant murder.
But as Christians, do you still hang on to the old Jewish laws about life? Or is all human life sacred?
