Origin Into Schools

All across the US, thousands of free copies of Darwin's Origin of Species were handed out to students and faculty at universities, celebrating the 150th anniversary of his book.
This one includes a 50 page forward by Ray Comfort, which gives some of Darwins history and early life, some of the problems with his theory, as well as a Gospel presentation for consideration.

Even considering those additions, this is simply waste. OoS is all around net freely available to anyone who wants to read and this'll just fire up argument, on both sides.

Exactly, anyone who doesn't know of it, probably isn't interested and most kids don't really care about what they're taught at school, they just want to get outta there!
The ones who really want to know will read it for themselves eventually anyway.
There are lots of more simple ways to teach children the things they need to know.

You might be surprised then. Many were happy to receive a free copy. As for "not really caring", that would seem to be more high school kids attitude than college students. We distributed 2,000 of them at ASU in about two hours. And many more were given away at the top 100 universities across the US. How can you find fault in receiving a free book?

And Kaunisto, instead of calling it fueling argument, what's wrong with generating healthy debate?

This is what I find interesting. The atheists are all angry about it, threatening book burnings and even Richard Dawkins told students that they should rip out the first 50 pages. Sounds like censorship to me. What are they afraid of? Darwin's complete work is right there for reading, and if Comfort's forward is really as stupid and ignorant as they claim, shouldn't people be able to determine this for themselves? Ah, but the atheist protectors of all stupid people feel that they must not let this information out. How arrogant is that?

As Christians, we are not afraid of Darwin's theory, the book includes his complete work along with Comfort's 50 page forward. Let each side speak for itself. People can decide for themselves which one makes more sense.

I'm against anything being given to children to read unless it is part of the 'reading list' for their courses.
If they are studying the book as part of a curriculum, then sure, give it to them.
In the same way that I don't believe in handing out Bibles or Watchtowers, I don't believe that any other books should be handed out to kids as a 'must read' and I would apply this to even Richard Dawkins' books.
People should be left alone to decide for themselves what they want to read.
It's not the actual book that bothers me but the pushing of one person's ideas on young people.

Ok, do we understand that these are COLLEGE students? At 18 in the US, you're considered an adult.
No one is forced to take one, and it is not required reading for anyone.

I hand out Gospel tracts to people every weekend. Those who don't want them either ignore me or say, "no thanks." Still others may stop and discuss, debate or even argue the subject for a bit. No force is used at all. A free country is a great thing!

And hey, if you've got any free books that you're willing to give away, including Dawkins, I might be interested. Let me know.

I'd say there already is healthy debate, and some.

I have to questions for you on that statement Mel:

1. If you're prepared to accept any free books I'm giving away, would you read them?
2. If you're prepared to read anything that you get given, are you prepared to debate it.

And then if the answers to the two questions is "yes" then why don't you read the rest of this board and debate the subjects there?

No, Morwen, my time is worth more than that. I did not say I would accept anything I was given, and the reason is because I wouldn't take one that I wasn't planning on reading. That answers #1.
I said I might be interested. Let me know what ya got, and if I'm interested, we can work out the details of how you can send it to me.

Now, as for #2, (which is completely different than offering me a free book, BTW), I read and debate what I find interesting and have time to get into on the boards - this isn't the only board I hang out on.

Some people who were offered these free books, refused them, and that's ok. They weren't interested, not a problem.
Others tried to collect them in order to destroy them, I don't get that, but whatever, it's their free choice.
Still others took them because they wanted to read them.

No one was forced, it was simply a free offer to those who wanted one.

Who's Comfort? I know he wrote the foreword but know zip about him otherwise.

And because I know I'll never read them is why I politely refuse any religious books or mags I get offered.
Maybe you're different Mel but in my experience those who hand them out definitely try to force them on me, and they even get quite argumentative and huffy at times. Which makes me mad, and even less inclined to want to take them - my time is also worth more than that.

Those Watchtower people are the pits. Even when they ring the bell and I tell them politely to please leave, they still insist on leaving that mag in the mailbox or stuck in the gate. And they don't go without first getting me all riled up - almost like they won't take no for an answer. Puts me right off.

Apart from anything else their insistence and doggedness might make them feel good but it's an intrusion on my privacy. They don't know the meaning of "free choice".
