There are so many different ones, all making a feeble attempt to reach God or idolatrous gods in their own making. All the while holding on to their own pet sins, trying to justify themselves and work their way into God's grace. But it will never happen. I say again, religion is a horrible thing. Christianity, however, does not fit into that category. It is not an attempt to reach God, but God reaching out to undeserving man through the sacrifice on the cross. There is nothing we can do to earn our way, it is a free gift. All we must do is repent (turn from our sins, agree with God, forsake our sinful nature) and trust in Jesus Christ alone. He paid the penalty for us, and there is no other Name under heaven by which men can be saved. The pope can't do it, a priest can't do it, nor even an angel from heaven, but only God Himself. All the good works that you may see from a Christian is not earning his way, but it is evidence of a changed life. But don't be deceived, good works are not proof that one is saved, but lack of them is proof that they're not. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Order ofMelchizedek)Thu, 10 Dec 2009 14:22:08 +0000 Re: Ranting again about Religionhttps://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7424,from=rss#post7424https://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7424,from=rss#post7424Of course there are good religious people Mo - I said at the start that I didn't mean to offend anyone and particularly the RCs, I'm simply trying to get my head around why they support the church they do, when it has been proved so often that there is so much hypocrisy there. It's been an interesting chat both here and on the other board - I'm just sorry that nobody of the RC persuasion has entered in to the discussion. But then, that's probably to be expected!nondisclosed_email@example.com (Petal Alderin)Sun, 29 Nov 2009 12:31:27 +0000 Re: Ranting again about Religionhttps://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7423,from=rss#post7423https://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7423,from=rss#post7423I'm so sorry to hear about you friend Petal. For me that experience at the Marymount was the last straw. I finally told the nun who was yelling at me to stop moaning, that maybe if she'd actually tried having a baby rather than theorising about it she might actually have a clue and that she should ..... off and send a lay nurse in to take care of me. And I told the doctor that if that was the only hospital he worked in, I'd find another doctor, those women were never going to get near me again. And I went home with a nasty infection to boot. I have a pathological dislike of everything that organisation stands for I'm afraid. I know logically that not all religions buy into their nonsense and I've met some really good people who practice religion, like our host on this board, of course, so my rant is not directed at all of them, it;s just this one that really gets up my nose.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Morwen Oronor)Sun, 29 Nov 2009 11:25:01 +0000 Re: Ranting again about Religionhttps://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7422,from=rss#post7422https://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7422,from=rss#post7422I wouldn't trust them either, and knowing what they know I can't fathom why RCC member parents are so happy and proud when their sons are chosen to be altar boys - no ways! I think they can still have faith and follow a doctrine in another church instead of continuing to contribute financially and still supporting this evil organization in all other ways, and turning a blind eye to the corruption. To me, that's not being Christian at all. Nuns are mostly bitter and twisted old hags who also take their suppressed sexual frustrations out on children by intimidating them and being nasty, who knows why. And a lot of them run away to join the convents because they're simply social misfits to begin with and so it's a place to escape to and hide. My opinion, of course. Some years ago a Roman Catholic friend of mine who lived alone, was attacked in her home and brutally gang raped by three intruders who left her for dead. Her injuries were horrific. She managed to raise the alarm and was rushed off to hospital. Two nuns came to visit her just once, and implied that it was her fault that she'd been raped (she was fast asleep at 2am when it happened) and refused to come back again or offer counselling or comfort because she was supposedly now "unclean." And the priest wouldn't visit either, because he was "embarrassed". Needless to say she has never ever been back to the church, and is now happy without any form of religion in her life at all. She has a wonderful support group of friends who brought her through this dreadful experience and finds that we are all more there for her than any representative of the church or a so-called loving God! I find so-called religious people are the biggest hyprocrites around, sorry! nondisclosed_email@example.com (Petal Alderin)Sun, 29 Nov 2009 03:57:13 +0000 Re: Ranting again about Religionhttps://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7421,from=rss#post7421https://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7421,from=rss#post7421Rick from where I'm looking, and from experience of physical abuse at the hands of nuns, I'm afraid that it is very much part of the doctrine. The nuns try to instill an attitude of stoicism in the people they teach. They are harsh, unfeeling women devoid of "the milk of human kindness". As a child in a convent school, I was beaten for the most unlikely infractions, with the sharp end of a ruler on the knuckles and as an adult, I was left alone in my first experience of childbirth to get one with it, with the door to the room left open and cleaners allowed to drift in and out while they were probably dong their prayers or something. Sorry but I am bitter and twisted about these people. I haven't met a nun or a priest yet that I've felt I could trust. Of course logically not all of them are like the ones of my experience but I would definitely not take a chance with a child of mine around these perverts.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Morwen Oronor)Sat, 28 Nov 2009 23:07:57 +0000 Re: Ranting again about Religionhttps://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7420,from=rss#post7420https://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7420,from=rss#post7420First, I am not a Catholic so I may miss something on this. The main reason people will stay or continue in a belief path is because of the personal conviction that the teaching itself is true even when people entrusted with that teaching fail. The priests you mentioned may have "gotten away with it" in the practice of their perversions for many years but the truth about them did eventually come out. The doctrines they taught were doctrines that the people of the Catholic Church count as true even if their actions went totally against the doctrines. So people stay because the failure of one or even many men does not negate the doctrines that are being taught.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Pastor Rick)Sat, 28 Nov 2009 22:00:26 +0000 Re: Ranting again about Religionhttps://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7419,from=rss#post7419https://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7419,from=rss#post7419I hardly think that Dublin is a backward parish, nor Boston! Parents get thrilled and excited when their sons are chosen as altar boys. I wouldn't allow my son near any of these damn perverts. And then they get "surprised" when it turns out that their kids were man-handled ... meanwhile most of the time it seems as though they're led like lambs to the slaughter, as they say. I'm really really angry about this now - it has always upset me dreadfully but now I'm starting to think that the RCC parishioners and congregations should start boycotting their church - not only by not attending, but by with-holding their monetary contributions. I have absolutely no respect left for Roman Catholicism I'm afraid, nor those who support it. Not any more. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Petal Alderin)Sat, 28 Nov 2009 13:04:36 +0000 Re: Ranting again about Religionhttps://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7416,from=rss#post7416https://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7416,from=rss#post7416When I've asked catholics about this, they say that it only happens in 'backward' parishes or when the priest has 'mental' problems and that the church addresses it and that the media blow it out of proportion and blah blah! But what about the child that has been harmed? Even if only one child is hurt by the actions of an adult, the entire organisation ought to be examined and the practice of having children exposed to priests, or nuns, should be stopped immediately. To be honest, while I can accept that they perceive that priests and nuns do a lot of good work, I don't see why little children should be roped into religious ceremony. Until a child is old enough to decide that the religion is right for them, no child should be made to participate in formal religious ceremony. Choir boys are an old hangover from a past of child abuse, the practice should be discontinued. If the church needs piping voices for their choirs. let them get women to do it.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Morwen Oronor)Sat, 28 Nov 2009 11:55:13 +0000 Re: Ranting again about Religionhttps://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7415,from=rss#post7415https://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7415,from=rss#post7415Have commented on your reply on Illusia Mo ... I agree with what you say but it still doesn't answer my question and it can't, because you aren't a religious believer. You and I both believe that organized religion causes more trouble in the world than just about anything else. I want to hear from Roman Catholics if possible about their feelings on this kind of stuff! A while ago I mentioned an allied subject about cults and brainwashing and abuse there, but nothing much came of it if I remember - the believers were either to shocked or feeling too guilty or too brainwashed to comment much. So perhaps I'm expecting too much ...nondisclosed_email@example.com (Petal Alderin)Sat, 28 Nov 2009 10:24:52 +0000 Re: Ranting again about Religionhttps://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7412,from=rss#post7412https://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7412,from=rss#post7412Petal, firstly people don't believe that their priests would do that. A little like no one believed it when it was reported that the Nazis were murdering Jews. Most members of the faith simply deny that it would either happen in their local parish or that their priest would do that. It's always somewhere else and then of course people say the problem in Ireland is a political one and not a religious one and that it might even be Protestant propaganda. There are excuses. The RCC is too entrenched in under-developed countries for it ever to be wiped out and people are simply too afraid to imagine their lives without religion and the RCC just appeals to poor uneducated people. And wealthy members get great tax breaks from giving money to the church and they get wonderful recognition by the church for being generous and then it's family tradition and a whole lot of other things. I also don't want to tread on people's toes but I always do, so I'm going to say it anyway. With the knowledge that we have today that all the religion in the world is based on pure mythology, why can't we simply turn places of religion into placed of education and move 'faith' into the privacy of our homes and do away with all the nonsense? And especially this brand of nonsense.nondisclosed_email@example.com (Morwen Oronor)Sat, 28 Nov 2009 07:48:54 +0000 Ranting again about Religionhttps://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7411,from=rss#post7411https://btimeandagain.runboard.com/p7411,from=rss#post7411Firstly let me say that I don't mean to offend anyone - what I'm about to say is entirely my personal view and I need to air it, because I'm very puzzled. I'm hoping that instead of taking umbrage, religious folk here - an particularly those who subscribe to the Roman Catholic faith - will be able to come up with some credible answers for me. It has happened so often, time and time again all over the world, that RC priests are discovered to have abused children. Again during this last week there has been a considerable amount of press coverage regarding a "new" discovery of this filth and perversion going on in Ireland. Again, it has been stated that there was a huge cover-up by the Church, and that the Vatican and the Pope knew all about it but did absolutely nothing, with the result that the abuse continued without the culprits being punished or suspended or defrocked or whatever. In my opinion this is disgusting, despicable, unforgiveable and any other derogatory words you can think of are still too good when it comes to the Pope and all his underlings. They're evil. But as I said, we all know that already. What I would like to ask is why, knowing that this goes on ad nauseum, do people who follow the Roman Catholic religion persist in supporting such a faith? Why don't they band together and do something about it? Why don't they leave this church and find somewhere else to go? To me, knowingly following a faith that subscribes to such evil practice and condones this shocking behaviour is just as bad as doing the same thing oneself. Why, in this day and age, continue to obey a mere man who rules with an iron fist and doesn't condone the use of birth control, forces celibacy on men and women who want to preach, won't recognize divorce or even allow divorced people to marry again and take the sacraments and punishes young children of such marriages by refusing to allow them to be baptised etc etc - and yet turn a blind eye to the constant paedophilia and abuse going on in the world by high up members of this church who are supposed to be trustworthy and upright and dignified and humble and honest and all the bloody rest of it?? There are always excuses, aren't there? No wonder I'm seriously confused and puzzled. nondisclosed_email@example.com (Petal Alderin)Sat, 28 Nov 2009 05:02:59 +0000
